El Zonte

Bitcoin Beach, and a very good right-hander.

El Zonte is twenty minutes west of El Tunco and about a decade behind it, which is the entire appeal. It is also the village where a donor-funded experiment in circular bitcoin economics started in 2019 and, improbably, kept working after the cameras left.

The wave

A right-hand point over cobblestones. It needs a bit of size to get going and it is more forgiving than Punta Roca. On a chest-high day it is the best wave in the country for an intermediate surfer.

About the bitcoin thing

You can ignore it entirely and have a good week. But if you are curious, this is the only place on earth where the tienda, the barber and the pupuseria all take lightning payments without blinking. Bring a wallet with a few dollars in it and try to spend a day without cash.
