Which base, for which trip.
The best places to stay in El Salvador — coast, capital, coffee country and lake — with who each base suits and roughly what a night costs.

The short answer
Most trips work from two bases: the coast at El Tunco or El Zonte, and Santa Ana for the volcano and the lake. Add Ataco for coffee country and one night in Suchitoto. Only stay in San Salvador itself if you arrive late or leave early.
El Salvador is small enough that you never need more than three bases, and most people are happier with two.
The coast
El Tunco — the default. Walkable, sociable, loud at weekends. Every price point. Hotels in El Tunco.
El Zonte — twenty minutes west and much calmer. Better for a week than a weekend. Hotels in El Zonte.
La Libertad — the working port. Stay here if Punta Roca is the point of the trip.
The highlands
Santa Ana city — the practical base for the volcano and Lake Coatepeque. Cheap, real, and forty minutes from the trailhead.
Lake Coatepeque — stay on the water if the budget allows. Cardedeu is the splurge.
Ataco, Ruta de las Flores — colonial rooms, cold nights, coffee at the source.
The capital
Escalón and Santa Tecla — leafy, residential, good restaurants, safe to walk in the evening. Hotels in San Salvador.
Zona Rosa — business hotels and embassies. Convenient, slightly sterile, good for a late arrival.
A shape that works
Two nights coast, two nights Santa Ana, two nights Ataco, one night Suchitoto, one night near the airport. That is the ten-day itinerary and it needs three hotel bookings, not nine.
Questions people actually ask
Should you stay in San Salvador?
One or two nights, in Escalón or Santa Tecla, is plenty. The capital is worth a day but the coast is forty minutes from the airport.
What does a hotel cost in El Salvador?
Hostel dorms $12–20, decent doubles $55–90, boutique and beachfront $130–280. Prices rise 30–50% over Christmas and Semana Santa.
Where do digital nomads stay?
El Zonte and Santa Tecla. Both have reliable fibre, coworking and monthly rates. See the [digital nomad guide](/living/digital-nomad/).
