The short answer
Most nationalities need no visa to visit — a $12 tourist card gives 90 days. For residency, the main routes are rentista (proven monthly income), pensionado (pension), investor, and family. Temporary residency takes three to six months and costs $2,500–6,000 including legal fees.
The tourist entry is trivial. Residency is a paperwork exercise, and the paperwork is the whole difficulty.
The routes
Rentista. Proof of stable monthly income from abroad — investments, rental income, a remote salary. The most-used route for people under retirement age. Expect to show bank statements over six to twelve months and a notarised income declaration.
Pensionado. A state or private pension, documented and apostilled. Lower thresholds in practice and the simplest file to assemble.
Investor. Capital into a Salvadoran company or real estate. Amounts and conditions vary with the vehicle; this needs a lawyer before you move any money.
Family. Marriage to a Salvadoran, or a Salvadoran parent or grandparent. Fastest route to permanent status and to dual citizenship.
Freedom Passport. The $1M bitcoin-denominated citizenship programme. Different product, different buyer.
The documents
Every foreign document must be apostilled in the country that issued it and translated by a certified translator in El Salvador. You will need:
- Passport, with the entry stamp
- Birth certificate, apostilled
- Police clearance from your country of residence, apostilled, usually under six months old
- Proof of income or pension, apostilled
- Marriage or divorce certificates where relevant
- Salvadoran medical certificate and criminal record check, obtained here
Time and money
Three to six months from filing, if the file is complete. Government fees are modest; the cost is legal work and translation. Budget $2,500–6,000 all in for a straightforward single applicant, more for a family.
The honest caveat
Immigration practice here changes faster than it is published, and what a lawyer in San Salvador tells you this month beats what any website tells you. This page is a map, not a filing. If you want an introduction to someone who does this daily, ask here.
Questions people actually ask
Do I need a visa for El Salvador?
Not for tourism, for most Western nationalities. You buy a $12 tourist card on arrival which is valid for 90 days across the CA-4 countries.
How do I get permanent residency in El Salvador?
By holding temporary residency for the qualifying period and then applying to convert it, or immediately through marriage to a Salvadoran or Salvadoran parentage.
Can I work on a residency permit?
Temporary residency with work authorisation exists but is a separate endorsement. Rentista status assumes your income comes from outside the country.
Does El Salvador tax foreign income?
El Salvador taxes territorially — income sourced outside the country is generally not taxed here. Your home country may tax you regardless; US citizens file wherever they live.
