The short answer
For surf, El Tunco and Sunzal. For swimming, Playa San Diego and the Costa del Sol. For empty sand, Playa El Espino and the east. Most of the coast is dark volcanic sand with a steep shelf and real rip currents.
El Salvador’s coast is volcanic, which means dark sand, a steep shelf and water that gets deep fast. It is a spectacular coast to surf and a demanding one to swim, and knowing which beach is which saves a bad afternoon.
The surf coast, west of La Libertad
Playa El Tunco — black sand, the rock the town is named after, and the beach break where the lessons happen. Busy, walkable, loud.
Playa Sunzal — five minutes west. The long right point and the best sunsets on this stretch.
Playa El Zonte — cobble and sand, quieter, and the town where you will end up staying longer than planned.
The swimming beaches
Playa San Diego — ten minutes east of La Libertad. Long, flat, sandy, with beach houses and far fewer rocks.
Costa del Sol — an hour and a half southeast of the capital. A sand spit with the estuary on one side and the ocean on the other. This is where Salvadoran families go.
Bahía de Jiquilisco — mangrove estuary and barrier islands. Calm water, boat access, turtles between June and December.
The empty east
Playa El Espino — three hours out, almost nobody there, very good seafood.
Playa El Cuco — the lightest sand in the country and a growing cluster of small hotels.
Las Flores, Punta Mango — surf beaches in Usulután with the best waves and the fewest people.
The rip current warning, once
The shelf drops quickly along most of this coast and the currents pull hard on an outgoing tide. Swim where other people are swimming, do not swim at dawn or dusk alone, and if you are pulled out, swim parallel to the shore rather than against it. This is the thing that actually hurts visitors here.
Questions people actually ask
Does El Salvador have white-sand beaches?
Mostly no. The coast is volcanic, so the sand runs from charcoal to dark gold. Playa El Cuco and the far east have the lightest sand in the country.
Which beach is best for swimming?
Playa San Diego and the Costa del Sol strip. Both are flatter and sandier than the surf beaches west of La Libertad.
Are the beaches safe?
Yes, with respect for the water. Rip currents are the genuine risk on this coast — far more visitors get into trouble swimming than through crime.
