San Salvador

A capital that changed faster than its reputation.

San Salvador is the part of the trip most itineraries skip, usually on advice that is ten years out of date. The historic centre was comprehensively restored between 2021 and 2024, and on a Sunday morning the plaza in front of the cathedral is full of families, street food and a brass band.

Give it one full day

Two nights is enough to see the centre, the crypt, one museum and the crater. Base yourself in Escalón or Santa Tecla, come into the centre early, and be back uphill for dinner.

The volcano is right there

El Boquerón sits forty minutes from the cathedral. You can be standing on the rim of a 500-metre crater before lunch and back in a restaurant by two, which is not a thing most capital cities offer.
