The short answer
A single person lives comfortably on $1,000–1,600 a month outside the capital, and a couple on $1,600–2,500. Rent is the main variable — $350 for a local one-bed in Santa Ana, $900+ for a foreigner-standard apartment in Escalón.
El Salvador uses the US dollar, which makes budgeting unusually simple: no exchange rate, no devaluation risk, and prices that read the way they do at home.
Monthly budgets
| Category | Single | Couple | Family of four |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rent | $350–900 | $500–1,200 | $800–1,800 |

Where the money goes
Rent is the only figure that moves much. A perfectly good local apartment in Santa Ana is $300. The same square metres in Escalón with a gym, a gate and a generator is $1,000. Coastal rentals in El Zonte spike 40% between December and April.
Groceries are cheap at the market and expensive in the supermarket, and the gap is larger than in most countries. Imported goods carry a real premium — cheese, wine, breakfast cereal.
Utilities run higher than people expect because air conditioning is not optional on the coast. Budget $120 a month in the lowlands and half that in the highlands.
Healthcare is the good news. A private consultation is $40–80 and private insurance for a healthy 40-year-old is around $60–90 a month. See healthcare.
The comparison that matters
For most people moving here from North America, the saving is between 45% and 60% at the same standard of living, and the biggest single line is housing. The monthly data series is on the cost of living data page, updated quarterly.
Questions people actually ask
Is El Salvador cheap to live in?
Cheaper than the US and most of Europe, and comparable to Guatemala. It is not the cheapest country in Central America — Nicaragua and Honduras are lower — but it uses the US dollar, which removes currency risk.
How much is rent in El Salvador?
A local-standard one-bedroom runs $250–400 outside the capital. Foreigner-standard apartments in Escalón, Santa Tecla or on the coast run $700–1,400.
Can you live on $1,000 a month in El Salvador?
Yes, as a single person outside San Salvador, renting locally and eating locally. It is tight on the coast in high season.
