Surf City, honestly assessed.
Where to surf in El Salvador — Punta Roca, Sunzal, El Zonte and the east — with wave type, skill level, best swell and what a week of lessons actually costs.

The short answer
The best waves are right-hand points over rock and cobble, working best on a south swell between March and October. Punta Roca is the standout and is advanced-only. Sunzal and El Zonte are the intermediate answers; the beach break at El Tunco is where lessons happen.
El Salvador has roughly 300 kilometres of Pacific coast facing almost due south, which puts it directly in line with the swell that comes up from the Southern Ocean between March and October. The result is a run of long right-hand point breaks with warm water and, most of the year, offshore mornings.
The waves, west to east
Punta Roca, La Libertad. The best wave in the country and one of the best in Central America. A fast, hollow right over rock that runs for 300 metres on a good south. Advanced only — the entry is sharp, the take-off is critical, and the local crew have earned their priority.
Sunzal, El Tunco. A long, mellow right point over cobble. Forgiving on a chest-high day, and the wave most intermediate visitors spend their week on.
El Tunco beach break. Sand bottom, gutless at low tide, and where essentially every lesson in the country happens.
El Zonte. A cobble point that needs a bit of size. The best intermediate wave in the country and the most pleasant place to spend a week.
Las Flores and Punta Mango, the east. Three to four hours from the airport, in Usulután. Longer, emptier, better on a big swell, and worth the boat trip if you have the time.
What it costs
- Board rental: $10–15 a day
- Two-hour lesson: $25–35
- A week at a surf camp with board, breakfast and two daily sessions: $450–700
- Boat trip to Punta Mango from Las Flores: $30–50 per person
The practical shape of a surf trip
Fly into SAL, which is thirty-five minutes from La Libertad — the shortest airport-to-wave transfer in the region. Base yourself in El Zonte if you want calm, El Tunco if you want company, La Libertad if Punta Roca is the point of the trip.
Bring reef boots for the points, a rash vest for the sun rather than the cold, and more zinc than you think. The water sits at 27°C and nobody wears a wetsuit.
Questions people actually ask
When is the best time to surf in El Salvador?
March to October, when the southern hemisphere swells arrive. April and May are the most consistent. November to February is smaller and cleaner, which suits beginners.
Is El Salvador good for beginners?
Yes, at the right spots. The sand-bottom beach break at El Tunco and the inside at El Zonte are forgiving. Punta Roca and Sunzal on a big day are not.
What is Surf City?
A government tourism programme launched in 2019 that rebuilt the coastal highway, the La Libertad malecón and the surf infrastructure, and brought the World Surf League to the country.
Do I need my own board?
No. Rental is $10–15 a day everywhere on the coast, and most hotels have boards. Bringing your own costs more in airline fees than renting for two weeks.
