The short answer
Two nights on the coast, three in Santa Ana for the volcano and lake, two on the Ruta de las Flores, one in Suchitoto, and a night either end near the capital. Ten days, four bases, nothing more than a two-hour drive apart.
Everything here is within a two-hour drive of everything else, so the only real planning decision is how few times you move hotels. Four bases in ten days is the sweet spot.
Days 1–3, the coast
Land at SAL, drive thirty-five minutes to El Zonte or El Tunco. Swim, sleep, surf. On day three take the boat or the walk east and eat at the La Libertad fish market.
Budget: $70–150 a night, $40 a day for food and boards.
Days 4–6, volcano and lake
Drive up to Santa Ana, ninety minutes. Hike Santa Ana volcano with the 11am group on day five, then drop to Lake Coatepeque for the afternoon swim. Spend day six on the water.
Budget: $60–180 a night. Volcano $6 entry, $5 guide.
Days 7–8, coffee country
Forty-five minutes west to the Ruta de las Flores. Ataco for the murals and the roasters, Juayúa for the weekend food festival, Apaneca for the highest coffee in the country. Time this so day seven or eight is a Saturday.
Budget: $55–150 a night, $25 a day for food.
Day 9, Suchitoto
Two hours east across the middle of the country to Suchitoto. Cobbles, a white church, and a dawn boat on the lake if you can face another early start.
Day 10, the capital and out
Ninety minutes to San Salvador. The restored historic centre, the cathedral crypt, one museum, and dinner in Escalón before an airport hotel or a late flight.
What it costs
A mid-range couple should budget $180–260 a day all in, including a rental car. Backpacking the same route on buses and in dorms comes to $55–80 a day. Add 30–50% over Christmas and Semana Santa.
Questions people actually ask
Is one week enough for El Salvador?
Yes. Drop the Ruta de las Flores or Suchitoto from the plan below and a week covers the coast and the volcanoes comfortably.
What is the best order to travel El Salvador?
Coast first, because the airport is closest to it and it is the easiest place to shake off the flight. Then inland and up, finishing in the highlands where the nights are cool.
