Last checked

La Libertad is a working port that happens to have a world-class wave at the end of it, and the government has spent five years and a great deal of money turning the first fact into the second under the banner of Surf City.

Punta Roca

A long, fast right-hand point over rock. It is the best wave in El Salvador and it is not a beginner’s wave — the entry is sharp, the take-off is critical, and the locals rightly own it. Watch a set before you paddle.

Stay here or up the coast?

La Libertad has the fish market, the malecón and the wave. El Tunco, fifteen minutes west, has the nightlife and the sand-bottom beach break. Most people sleep in El Tunco and come here to eat. If you surf, invert that.

  • Playa San Diego, ten minutes east, for a beach with fewer rocks
  • The Sunday seafood ritual at the pier restaurants

The malecón

Rebuilt under Surf City. Restaurants, lighting, families in the evening.

02

Punta Roca

The point, west end. Surf hotels and a rocky entry.

03

Ten minutes east. Longer, sandier, quieter.

SurfLa Libertad

Punta Roca, at six in the morning

The best wave in El Salvador belongs to the people who grew up on it. A morning at the point in La Libertad, and the etiquette of paddling out somewhere you have not earned.
