Schools for foreign families in El Salvador.

International and bilingual schools in El Salvador — fees, curricula, admissions timing, and what families moving here should expect.

The short answer

The main options are the American School (Escuela Americana), the German School, the British School and a set of strong bilingual private schools. Fees run $4,000–14,000 a year, well below equivalents in the region, and most foreign families settle in Santa Tecla or Escalón for the commute.

Families are a small share of the people moving here, and school choice ends up deciding where they live.

The schools

Escuela Americana, San Salvador — the largest international school, US curriculum, accredited, and where most diplomatic and corporate families go. Fees at the top of the range.

Deutsche Schule — German curriculum, strong academics, smaller and cheaper.

British School of El Salvador — English national curriculum and IGCSEs.

Bilingual private schools — a large tier of Salvadoran schools teaching substantially in English at $3,000–7,000 a year. Quality varies; visit, and talk to parents rather than admissions staff.

The practicalities

The school year runs January to November, not September to June. If you are moving from a northern-hemisphere system, expect a half-year adjustment.

Apply between August and October. Admissions want school reports, often apostilled, plus an assessment and an interview.

Fees are annual plus a one-off enrolment fee that can be substantial. Ask what is not included — transport, books, technology and capital levies add up.

Where families live

Almost all of the international schools are in or near San Salvador, which puts foreign families in Escalón, Santa Tecla or Santa Elena. Living on the coast and schooling in the capital is a two-hour daily round trip on a road you should not drive in the dark, and families who try it move inland within a year.

Questions people actually ask

How much are international school fees in El Salvador?

$4,000–14,000 a year depending on the school and year group, plus enrolment and capital fees. That is roughly half the cost of comparable schools in Panama or Costa Rica.

Do children need Spanish?

Not at the international schools, which teach in English or German. Bilingual private schools expect Spanish to develop quickly and are cheaper.

When do I need to apply?

The school year runs January to November. Apply between August and October for a January start; popular year groups fill.
