Data in El Salvador, without the queue at the airport.
Which eSIM works in El Salvador, what it costs, coverage on the coast, and whether a local Tigo or Claro SIM is cheaper than Airalo.

The short answer
An Airalo eSIM costs around $9 for 3GB over 30 days and works the moment you land. A local Tigo SIM is cheaper per gigabyte but needs a passport, a shop visit and about forty minutes.
Data here is genuinely good. The tourist corridor — San Salvador, the coast road, Santa Ana, the Ruta de las Flores — has solid 4G, and the coast towns have enough bandwidth that people work from them.
The two options
An eSIM, bought before you fly. Install it at home, land, switch it on. Around $9 for 3GB over 30 days, $17 for 10GB. Worth it for a trip under two weeks, and worth it on arrival day regardless — you want a working phone before you negotiate a taxi.
A local prepaid SIM. Tigo has the best coverage, Claro is close. Around $5 for the SIM and $10 for 8GB. You need your passport, and the shop in the arrivals hall closes with the last flight.
What I do
An eSIM for the first few days, then a Tigo SIM from the shop in a mall in Santa Tecla if the trip is longer than two weeks. For anything shorter, the eSIM is the whole answer.
Coverage notes: El Tunco and El Zonte are fine for video calls. Santa Ana volcano loses signal above the treeline. The far east — Punta Mango, El Espino — is patchy.
Questions people actually ask
Does El Salvador have good mobile coverage?
Yes, on 4G across the whole tourist corridor — the capital, the coast, Santa Ana and the Ruta de las Flores. 5G exists in San Salvador. Coverage thins in the eastern mountains.
Is an eSIM cheaper than a local SIM?
No. A local Tigo or Claro prepaid SIM is roughly half the price per gigabyte. The eSIM is buying convenience, not data.
Will my phone work with an eSIM?
Any iPhone from the XS, any recent Pixel, and most Samsung flagships. It must be carrier-unlocked.
