The short answer
Book the Santa Ana volcano tour and the Ruta de las Flores day trip; both save a full day of logistics. Skip the San Salvador city tour and the beach transfers — Uber, the 192 bus and a $5 local guide do the same job for a fraction of the price.
Worth booking
Santa Ana volcano — $45–70 including transport from San Salvador. The hike itself requires a guide anyway, and getting to Cerro Verde by public bus means leaving at five in the morning. Most tours add Lake Coatepeque, which is the right pairing.
Ruta de las Flores — $60–90. Five towns spread over 36km of mountain road with no useful bus timetable between them. Worth it as a day trip; better still as two nights in Ataco.
Joya de Cerén and San Andrés — $40–70. The two archaeological sites are close together and hard to combine on public transport.
Punta Mango boat trip — $30–50 from Las Flores. The only way to reach the wave.
Do it yourself
San Salvador city tour. Uber between the cathedral, the palace and MARTE costs $12 all in. The city guide has the order to do them in.
Coast transfers. The 192 bus runs La Libertad to El Zonte all day for under a dollar.
Tamanique waterfalls. Turn up in the village and take a local guide for $10 a group.
El Boquerón. $1 park entry, forty minutes from the capital, no guide needed.
Booking notes
Book the volcano the day before in high season — groups fill. Everything else can be arranged the morning of. Prices drop noticeably if you book directly with the operator in town rather than online, but the online booking is what saves you the morning.
