The government fees for Salvadoran residency are modest. Almost all of the cost is professional: legal work, certified translation, and getting foreign documents apostilled before they leave home.

Where people overspend

Translation done twice. Documents translated abroad are usually rejected. Have them translated here, by a translator the lawyer already works with.

Apostilles obtained late. Getting a birth certificate apostilled from another continent after you have arrived adds weeks and courier costs. Do it before you fly.

Fixed-fee packages. Relocation firms bundle legal work at $6,000–12,000. That can be worth it for a family with a complicated file and is poor value for a single rentista applicant.

What it does not include

Ongoing costs — renewals, the DUI, and tax filings. Budget a few hundred dollars a year after approval.

The routes themselves are set out in the residency guide, and if you want an introduction to a lawyer, ask here.
