The short answer
Fibre in the capital and the main coast towns runs 100–300 Mbps, rents are $500–900 for a furnished one-bed, and you can stay 90 days on a tourist card. El Zonte and Santa Tecla are the two established bases.
El Salvador arrived on the remote-work map through bitcoin rather than through infrastructure, and then turned out to have the infrastructure anyway.
Connectivity
Fibre is widely available in San Salvador, Santa Tecla and along the Surf City coast, at 100–300 Mbps for $30–50 a month. Mobile 4G is solid across the tourist corridor — an eSIM covers arrival, and a Tigo SIM covers a longer stay.
Power cuts happen. If your work does not tolerate them, pick a building with a generator, which is normal in Escalón and increasingly normal on the coast.
The two bases
El Zonte. Coastal, small, walkable, with a genuine remote-work community left over from the Bitcoin Beach period. Furnished one-beds run $600–1,100 depending on season. Surf before work; the internet is good enough for video calls.
Santa Tecla. Twenty minutes from central San Salvador, cooler, walkable, with restaurants and coworking. $500–900 furnished. The sensible choice if you have meetings.
El Tunco is where you go for the evening, not where you work.
Costs
$1,300–2,000 a month covers a furnished flat, food, a coworking desk and a weekend on the road. Full breakdown in the cost of living guide.
Status
Ninety days visa-free covers most stays. Beyond that, the rentista route is designed almost exactly for remote income, and it is the route most long-stayers eventually take.
Questions people actually ask
Is the internet good in El Salvador?
In the capital and on the Surf City coast, yes — fibre at 100–300 Mbps is normal and cafes are reliable. It degrades quickly in rural areas and the eastern mountains.
Is there a digital nomad visa?
Not as a distinct product. Most remote workers use the 90-day tourist entry or apply for rentista residency, which fits remote income well.
Where do nomads base themselves?
El Zonte on the coast, Santa Tecla and Escalón in the capital. El Tunco has the social life and the worst sleep.
