The Salvadoran passport, and how you get one.

How to get an El Salvador passport — who qualifies, the naturalisation timeline, visa-free travel, renewal costs and the consulate process from abroad.

The short answer

A Salvadoran passport gives visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to around 130 countries, including the Schengen area. You qualify by birth, by Salvadoran parentage, by marriage, or by naturalisation after the qualifying period of residency.

The Salvadoran passport is an underrated travel document and a consequential one for the two million Salvadorans living abroad.

Who qualifies

By birth — born in El Salvador, or born anywhere to a Salvadoran parent. Nationality by descent is not limited to the first generation in practice, but registration matters; unregistered claims get harder with each generation.

By marriage — after a qualifying period of residence and marriage to a Salvadoran national.

By naturalisation — after holding residency for the qualifying period, with Spanish-language ability and knowledge of the country.

Central Americans and Spaniards get a shortened route under the constitution, a reciprocity arrangement that predates modern immigration policy.

What it gets you

Around 130 destinations without a prior visa, including the Schengen area, the UK, Japan and essentially all of Latin America. It does not include the United States, where Salvadorans need a B1/B2 visa.

It also gets you the CA-4 free-movement area — Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua — and the right to vote, own land without restriction, and live here indefinitely.

Applying from abroad

Salvadoran consulates handle registration, first passports and renewals. The queue at the consulates in Los Angeles, Houston and Washington is the real constraint — book the appointment before you assemble the documents, because the appointment is the long pole.

The documents

  • Salvadoran birth certificate, or the parent’s, for a descent claim
  • DUI (the national ID) if you have one
  • Proof of the parental link, apostilled if issued abroad
  • Previous passport, if renewing

For descent claims where the parent’s documents are old, incomplete or held in a rural municipal registry, a Salvadoran lawyer saves months. We can introduce you to one.

Questions people actually ask

How powerful is the El Salvador passport?

Mid-table and better than its region — roughly 130 destinations visa-free or visa-on-arrival, including the Schengen area, the UK and most of Latin America. The United States is not among them.

Can I get a Salvadoran passport through my parents?

Yes. Children of Salvadoran parents are Salvadoran by descent regardless of where they were born, and can register and apply through a consulate.

How much does a Salvadoran passport cost?

Around $60 for the standard book through the consular system, more for express service. Fees change; confirm with your consulate.

Does El Salvador allow dual citizenship?

Yes, and Salvadorans by birth cannot lose their nationality by acquiring another. See [dual citizenship](/living/dual-citizenship/).
