The short answer
Fly into San Salvador (SAL). The cheapest reliable routes are Avianca and Volaris from Los Angeles, Houston and Miami, typically $220–380 return. September and October are the cheapest months; December and Semana Santa are the most expensive.
SAL is a hub airport for Avianca, which is the single most useful fact about flying here: connections through San Salvador are frequent and the point-to-point fares from the US are competitive as a result.
The routes that are actually cheap
- Los Angeles — Avianca and Volaris, $220–350 return
- Houston — United and Avianca, $280–420
- Miami — Avianca and American, $250–400
- Mexico City — Volaris and Avianca, $160–280
- Madrid — Avianca, the only one-stop option from Europe, €650–900
Timing
Fares follow the diaspora, not the tourists. December, Semana Santa and August are expensive because Salvadorans abroad are flying home. September and October are cheap and wet. February and March are the sweet spot: dry season, good swell, shoulder pricing.
The traps
Volaris fares look cheapest and are not once you add a bag. Avianca’s basic fare has no carry-on above a personal item. Price both with a checked bag before you compare, and check whether your card covers the travel insurance you would otherwise buy separately.
Arriving at SAL, get an eSIM before you land and arrange a transfer in advance — the airport guide covers the taxi rates and the bus.
