Embassies and consulates in El Salvador.

Foreign embassies in San Salvador and Salvadoran consulates abroad — what they can and cannot do for you, and what to do if you lose a passport.

The short answer

Most foreign embassies in El Salvador are in San Salvador, clustered in the Escalón, Santa Elena and Antiguo Cuscatlán districts. Salvadoran consulates abroad handle passports, the DUI, civil registry documents and nationality by descent.

Two separate systems get confused under one heading: foreign embassies in El Salvador, which help their own nationals here, and Salvadoran consulates abroad, which serve the two million Salvadorans living outside the country.

Foreign embassies in San Salvador

Almost all of them sit in the western districts of the capital — Antiguo Cuscatlán, Santa Elena and Escalón — within twenty minutes of each other. The United States, Spain, Mexico, Germany, Canada, Japan and the European Union all maintain missions. The United Kingdom covers El Salvador from its embassy in Guatemala City with an honorary consul in San Salvador, which is worth knowing before you plan a trip across town.

Book consular appointments online. None of them take walk-ins for routine matters, and turning up without an appointment costs you a morning.

What an embassy will do

  • Issue an emergency travel document if your passport is lost or stolen
  • Contact family, or help arrange an emergency transfer of funds
  • Provide a list of local lawyers and doctors
  • Visit you if you are detained, and make sure you are treated lawfully

What it will not do

Pay medical bills, legal fees or hotel costs. Get you released from custody. Investigate a crime. Act as a substitute for travel insurance — which is the actual answer to most of what people hope an embassy will cover.

If your passport goes missing

  1. Report it to the Policía Nacional Civil and keep the report. You will need it.
  2. Contact your embassy and book an emergency appointment.
  3. Bring the police report, a photo, and any copy of the lost passport — which is why carrying a photograph of the data page is worth the thirty seconds.
  4. Expect an emergency document valid for a single journey home, not a replacement passport.

Salvadoran consulates abroad

There are consulates across the United States — Los Angeles, Houston, Washington DC, New York, Chicago and more — plus Canada, Mexico, Spain and Italy. They handle passports, the DUI national ID, civil registry documents, and registering a child born abroad to a Salvadoran parent.

That last one matters more than people realise: registration is what makes a descent claim straightforward later. See the passport guide and dual citizenship.

If a claim involves old documents held in a rural municipal registry, a Salvadoran lawyer saves months — we can introduce you to one.

Questions people actually ask

What can an embassy do if I lose my passport?

Issue an emergency travel document, usually within a day or two, and contact family or your bank. It cannot pay your bills, get you out of jail, or replace travel insurance.

Where is the US Embassy in El Salvador?

In Antiguo Cuscatlán, on Final Boulevard Santa Elena. Consular appointments are booked online and walk-ins are not accepted for routine services.

How do I get a Salvadoran passport from abroad?

Through a Salvadoran consulate. Book the appointment before you assemble documents — the appointment is the long pole. See [the passport guide](/living/passport/).
